Starring as the Scottish highlands, playing a wild and rugged West Cork and masquerading as mystical mythical Camelot, did you know that county Wicklow played the part of panoramic extras in no less than Braveheart, Michael Collins, Excalibur, Dancing at Lughnasa (Meryl Streep, Michael Gambon) and more.
Directed by John Boorman, the legend of King Arthur and Camelot (which starred a young Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren and Patrick Stewart, he of Star Trek fame), Excalibur was filmed around the Sally Gap. Spitting distance from the 5 star Ritz at Powerscourt. Today, you too can host your own Camelot in opulent style at the Ritz Carlton nestled in its stunning Wicklow demesne away from the camera.
Reign of Fire, a futuristic action fantasy starring Matthew McConaughey was shot in Wicklow as was the more recent Leap Year and P.S. I love (Hilary Swank, Lisa Kudrow and tons of hankies). All filmed against the backdrop of the Wicklow hills, Glendalough, Enniskerry, Powerscourt waterfall, the lot.
Of course Hollywood is not too far away from the Wicklow hills, well the Irish Hollywood that is, vying with a Dutch town of the same name for its Hollywood CA successor.
Wicklow’s towns have also popped up in bit parts on the silver screen in My Left Foot, Michael Collins, The Commitments, even Angela’s Ashes in a scene without rain (okay I made that one up it was raining throughout).
