Born on the very tip of Europe in Buncrana, in Donegal, McGuinnesss started to write poetry and short stories at a young age, teaching and lecturing along the way. Some of his more famous works include Factory Girls, Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme as well as translations and versions of European plays.
