A surprising retreat, perched on the edge of the River Moy in Co. Mayo. Lovingly restored from its historic status as a 19th Century ‘Ice Store’, the Hotel is a member of Ireland’s Blue Book of Irish Country Houses and enjoys the sort of unfussed, modern panache expected of a contemporary rustic retreat, two centuries later. Originally called ‘The Iceland Cottage’ or ‘Iceland House’ and strategically positioned on the Moy Estuary – which subsequently became the principal sea-port of Ireland. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the Moy Fishery Company was founded and salmon weirs built at the falls with great quantities of fish caught and shipped on to Dublin or Liverpool. Such activities required the importation of a great deal of ice (and a year round production of beer to quench the thirsty locals). The Ice House itself was constructed in 1859 serving dual residential and cold storage purposes.
